Gloat gloat gloat

This is not a review. This is me getting ready to review a book*. And gloating a little.

In between working on The Last Added Scene for ‘Singer in Rhunshan’ and flaying my fingers on faux-finished fiberglass, I have managed a digital coup. This:

liesmith cover

I have an e-book Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of Alis Franklin‘s debut fantasy novel Liesmith, which I sort of told you folks about here. (Might I add: a M/M urban fantasy novel, published not by one of the smaller erotic romance publishers, but by Hydra, the digital SF&F imprint of Random House. This will be important in my eventual review.)

The rest of you probably won’t get to see the book until it’s available for purchase on October 7, 2014.

Of course, the duty of a reader toward an ARC is that they read it once for sheer enjoyment. Then they read it again for an objective review, good points and bad. I’ll do my best.

There have been some books that slouched onto my reading list without fanfare, and pleasantly surprised me.

There have been others that, while eagerly awaited, fizzled away as I read them.

I really try not to even review or rank books that I know I’d give a one-star or two-star rating on Amazon or Goodreads. Other readers will do that work, and I no longer feel like adding to the negativity that author may be experiencing. While several really horrible books have prompted me to write such reviews in the past (and one even prompted me to start writing my own fiction), I’ve grown up a bit since then.

I’ll cheerfully go to the mat for great three-star, four-star, and five-star books.

I’m taking a chance on announcing this ARC before I’ve even read it. But I’ve read 200,000+ words of Alis Franklin’s other works, and they were damn fine words. So this one has a pedigree.

Gloatgloatgloatgloatgloat.

* Of course, the other duty of an ARC reader is holding back any reviews until the actual publication day: October 7. Sorry (not sorry.) Update: my review is here.

    1. Lol, naw. It’s fine: there’s not really any super sekkrit hush-hush or anything, so… meh. Just glad you’re enjoying it! :3
